Coldcalling salesman advises you of a problem that needs fixing
Type of Improvement?:
Non Specific
How does it work?: A common scam is for a salesman or builder to knock on your door, say he's "working in the area" and that your roof, drive, (or something else) needs some work. He quickly offers a low quote, and perhaps mentions he has material left over from another job that he can use. If it's a big job, such as an extension, the work may go on and on, with each invoice sucking more from your bank account with limited visible progress. By the time he leaves - or you finally give up - your house will probably look like a wreck and there wont be much you can do about it. How to avoid this scam?: It's often best to assume that any door to door salesman is a potential rogue especially if their vehicle is unprofessional, they won't offer a written quote or schedule for the job and insist on a cash upfront payment. Refuse to work with thee people even if they are cheap. Try and contact 3-4 reputable firms (ideally recommended by someone you trust) and get them to quote against the same written brief or job specification. |
