Title: Scam rating:
Company requests full payment for services in advance
Type of Improvement?: Non Specific
How does it work?: Many contracts today especially for kitchens, bathroom and bedroom home improvements require full payment in advance of the goods being installed or service carried out. This practice negates for the consumer their "right of set off" meaning they cannot withhold part of the price if for some reason they are dissatisfied with the work. The only means of redress is to go to court which is very expensive and difficult.
How to avoid this scam?: Never sign a home improvement contract that requires you to pay 100% of the cost upfront. Also offer the absolute minimum deposit you can get away with to retain as much power as possible.

Coldcalling salesman advises you of a problem that needs fixing
Type of Improvement?: Non Specific
How does it work?: A common scam is for a salesman or builder to knock on your door, say he's "working in the area" and that your roof, drive, (or something else) needs some work. He quickly offers a low quote, and perhaps mentions he has material left over from another job that he can use. If it's a big job, such as an extension, the work may go on and on, with each invoice sucking more from your bank account with limited visible progress. By the time he leaves - or you finally give up - your house will probably look like a wreck and there wont be much you can do about it.
How to avoid this scam?: It's often best to assume that any door to door salesman is a potential rogue especially if their vehicle is unprofessional, they won't offer a written quote or schedule for the job and insist on a cash upfront payment. Refuse to work with thee people even if they are cheap. Try and contact 3-4 reputable firms (ideally recommended by someone you trust) and get them to quote against the same written brief or job specification.
