How does it work?: In some hot property markets like London, homebuyers are looking for every advantage they can to be first in line. Unscrupulous estate agents take advantage of the situation by guaranteeing their clients they'll be the first to know about a new property if they slip them a pre-emptive cash sweetener (e.g., £500). How to avoid this scam?: Always refuse these kind of deals. There's never any guarantee anyway you'll get what you pay for. Where possible report the rogue agent to his superiors or a trade body like the Ombudsman of Estate Agents (if a member) or local Office of Trading Standards. |
